This 18 1/2" parang candung is from the island of Borneo: Sarawak, to be exact. Interestingly these parangs look a lot like the pira of the Yakan tribesmen of Basilan, an island that has long been renowned for the quality of its blades. The similarity is striking. I will, however, say these Sarawak parangs are a little better made, and not as nervewracking to source. Basilan is still one of the most dangerous places in the Philippines today, and home to the Abu Sayyaf. Borneo is a lot more peaceful.

The handle is beautifully carved and really fits my hand like a glove. It is 5" long with a 3/4" bolster. The design of parangs allows you to creep up on the blade for cutting and finer work. Parangs are incredible versatile blades.

The 12 11/16" blade on this one is thicker than most standard Malaysian parangs today at a solid 1/4" with a distal taper. The blade is convex ground from excellent leaf spring steel, which is tough and durable, and the steel of choice throughout Southeast Asia for its ready availability and suitability for a wide variety of tasks. The balance point is 3.75" in front of the bolster and the blade is around 2 1/4" wide at its widest point, making this a very weight forward chopper.

The scabbard is beautifully crafted from chatoyant wood. I believe this is high grade acacia (from the same family as Hawaiian koa) and fits the blade very well indeed. The sheath is drilled to allow it to be lashed to a belt or worn around the waist in the jungle (or forest or yard, depending on where you plan on using this blade)!

This parang just feels right to me. There are some minor grind and forge marks on the blade, but this is meant to be used, not coddled!

I am very impressed with how well-crafted this parang is and how beautifully the scabbard fits the blade and bolster.

This is a top notch parang from craftsmen in Sarawak I hope to work with in future! 18.7 oz, or 27.5 oz with the scabbard. $199 including shipping.
