In Malaysia today, traditionally-crafted parangs coexist with more modern adaptations, which feature cast plastic handles and polyurethane sheaths. In the hot, humid Malaysian jungle, wood fittings don't last forever and can rot. Modern versions like these Bidor parangs from the Malaysian state of Perak are built with the design features of the traditional parangs in mind. These are perhaps the best of the modern ones made today, and definitely much nicer than my previous batch of Malaysian jungle parangs.

This 16 5/16" parang is well made and made to use! Modern Malaysian parangs feature cast plastic handles, steel bolsters and carbon steel blades with the forge scale left on. These nice Bidor parangs feature well-crafted handles, good fittings and just a higher standard of overall workmanship than the standard Malaysian user parang.

The handle was molded from black plastic. There are little bits of extra plastic from casting that can be easily removed, even with a fingernail. The handle is 4 3/4" long, including the steel bolster. This is still nice and roomy, since you are meant to creep up on the bolster and choil.

The blade is 3/16" thick and 12 5/16" long. It is good, durable carbon spring steel that is tough and easy to sharpen. The forge scale has been retained on the blade to hold oil and preserve temper.

The sheath is thick PU and well-stitched. The loop is riveted on. These are definitely the nicest modern Malaysian parangs I've handled and are quite well finished for user blades.

The blade has a forge stamp. There is a glue stain on the handle that could be removed with a little alcohol.

The handle is locked onto the tang with a nut for maximum security. The end of the tang was ground off.

This is an excellent parang that is made to use! 14 oz, or 19.3 oz with the sheath. $95.
