This is a genuine Acehnese rencong, and beautifully crafted in the traditional manner. The sheath and handle are water buffalo horn. The handle incorporates buffalo bone for contrast, which is common on Acehnese and Minangkabau blades. The blade is besi putih, or white iron. This is actually nickel silver/white brass. I believe nickel silver was introduced from the west. The Acehnese consider this to be a very powerful metal with protective qualities, and it is considered the best material for a rencong aceh.

The spur at the ricasso and the filework on the ricasso and integral bolster are classic Acehnese. There is a hairline crack in the bone segment right below the bolster. The bottom section of the handle is just under 3″ long (3.54″ with the integral bolster).

The blade is 5.8″ long. This is a good size for carry at the waist and has more than enough length to get the job done.

The scabbard is carved in the traditional manner and has classic brass bands. The craftsmanship on this rencong is amazing.

The blade is 1/4″ thick; even though this blade is nickel silver, it is absolutely sturdy enough to get the job done.

There is a very fine check in the horn visible here. This is from the horn drying out in the previous owners’ homes. The check closed up upon returning to the humidity in this part of the world.

There is also a hairline crack in the blade here. Many Indonesians believe this makes the blade special, and allows for greater spiritual power.

Rencongs are often held along the forearm in this manner for slashing attacks, or spun around from concealment for stabbing with. Note the forged-in fuller, which is a very traditional and attractive feature.

This is a top notch rencong for the silat aficionado or anyone who collects beautiful Indonesian/Malay weaponry. 3.9 oz, or 4.6 oz with the sheath. $199.
