This WWII gunong/punyal is in excellent condition, given its age. This is no oversized tourist special; this is a classic-sized dagger for concealed carry by a Filipino Muslim at the time. The bolster and fittings are alpaca/nickel silver and traditionally chased. The wood handle and sheath are classic banati wood, and entirely free of cracks.

The guard and bolster are both traditionally chased.

The 5 1/4″-long blade is thick and still tight in the handle. An etch might bring out a pattern in this steel, but I have held off on cleaning it up or attempting anything of the sort.

The blade is 1 1/4″ wide. The bulbous handle is 3.5″ long, including the bolster. The total length of this gunong is 8.5″.

This is a beautiful, classic gunong from a time when the locals started making them larger for American buyers, and incorporating aluminum scrap into their manufacture. A rare find, especially in this condition. This gunong weighs 4 oz, or 6 oz in the sheath. $199.
